Hmmm....My Final Thoughts....L&P

When I first heard of the concept "Learn and Play" I was a little apprehensive about learning about "new technology." I am not afraid of technology but am the type of person that is fairly knowledgeable and was comfortable with my skills. Learn and Play has forced me to "learn" and expand my technology skills and bring me into the 21st century. Before now, I didn't have a clue as to what a "wiki" and let alone a "wiki sandbox." The only sandbox I knew of was the kind I played in as child making sand castles. This experience has definitely broaden my knowledge base of web 2.0. During this experience there were sites that I enjoyed more than others such as the online image generator, flickr and shelfari and then there were sites that I would rarely use such as twitter seeing that I am more of a person who prefers to communicate more via text messaging and e-mail. Overall, it has been a positive learning experience. The only thing I wish was that maybe we could have been paired up with an "expert" or "mentor" that we could check in with if we had any questions.

AudioBooks

I must I liked the idea of being able to download and listen to books. But unfortunately, the MOLDI wasn't in my opinion very user friendly. It took me about 1/2 to download a book then I had to upgrade my media player and it still wouldn't play. Maybe I will have better luck downloading onto my Ipod.

Podcast

This is a term that I have heard of but wasn't really familiar with how it worked exactly. After watching the common craft video I have a better understanding of it and it benefits. I discovered the site "PodFeed" which is organized into catergories. I had the opportunity to hear about the latest Iphone apps as well as learn french at my convenience. It is something that I could see the library using as a way of educating customers on our electronic resources.

You Tube

I have used You Tube way before Learn and Play and really enjoy watching the videos. I like the fact that once you view a video the site pulls up other related videos which could cause one to be on You Tube for hours!

CML Power Tool Box

I decided to explore the site called "Stumble Upon" and it is just want the name suggests. It has random, off the wall pictures. It definitely not a site I would recommend for young children because some of the material was very inappropriate. It contained alot of adult humor.

Web 2.0 Awards

I just explored the site called Fix-Ya. It is a site that provides online technical support and repairs for small electrical appliances to cars. It allows users to post their problems and then people can post possible solutions or post that they have the same problem. Very helpful and will definitely be one that I will use!

Google Docs

Well...after playing around with Google Docs I can see how it would be benefical to use in the workplace. It would definitely help to cut down on -mails and allow users to make changes among each other

Learn and Play Wiki Sandbox

I just posted my favorite book on the CML wiki sandbox. It was great to be able to "edit" and add my favorite as well as seeing other staff persons favorite.

Wild About Wikis

I enjoyed learning about the wikis and believe it would great to communicate with a particular group in CML to share and exchange ideas. It would definitely help to minimize the number of e-mails received on a weekly basis

Library 2.0

I just read the perspective, "Away From Icebergs" and they were just a few things that really stuck out in the article such as the following: "We need to focus our efforts not on teaching research skills but on eliminating the barriers that exist between patrons and the information they need, so they can spend as little time as possible wrestling with lousy search interfaces and as much time as possible actually reading and learning." It seems that as staff we do spend alot time trying to "teach" customers when in actuality it would be alot more easier and more efficienct if the websites were easier to navigate and "user -friendly." So I agree, that many times it is not the customer that "we need to fix" but maybe some of the technology!

Delicious

After exploring the delicious website I found fairly interesting. It was nice to see what other people list as their favorite websites and the tagging helps to make it very user friendly. It is definitely a site that I can see myself using in the future so good-bye to "my favorites!"

Twitter

I played around a little last week with Twitter and I think I will connected with my friends via text messaging. I personally don't know anyone with a twitter account and I can't see myself using that form of communicating.

Library Thing

Well I just finished exploring around with Library Thing and I prefer to use Shelfari. I just like the overall look of the site and it seems easier to navigate around.

Flickr

Yipee! I uploaded my first image from the flickr site. I have really enjoyed exploring all the different images on the site.

Ever Changing...Technology

Wow! I didn't know there was so much out in there in terms of technology. It is definitley ever changing and improving. I feel like I have been living in the dark ages because all these concepts are foreign to me. I have been playing around with the Flickr and really enjoying it! Hey what am I going to do with all my photo albums? Will they become a thing of the past....

Wow! This is my first time blogging! I have to admit this is pretty awesome to get paid and be able to play! I love my job.
